Environmental goals

The absolute goal of our environment work is that our industrial processes should have the lowest possible impact on the environment. It is self-evident that we will fulfil the demands and limitations of our environmental impact as laid down by the authorities, but that’s not enough for us. We are committed to staying one step ahead of public demands and to continuously improve our environmental standard. To achieve this we undertake a number of actions, e.g. in the following areas:

Energy saving. We are continuously analysing ways to reduce the energy we use in our processes. Today our average usage in all mills is within the demands of the EU standard, BAT (Best Available Technology).

Re-use of water. We are minimising our water consumption by re-using most of the water. Our usage is now just below 10 m3 per tonne of paper as an average within the whole Group, while Munkedals is down to less than 2,9 m3 per tonne of paper which is the lowest consumption in the industry.

Discharges to water. Protecting life in the Örekil River and Gullmar Fjord is a necessity for us at Arctic Paper Munkedals. Our discharges to water are now among the very lowest in the industry and our vision is to create a totally closed water system to fully eliminate discharges within a few years. At Håfreströms and Kostrzyn we also have systems for effective purification of our process water.

Certified pulp. Our mills are FSC certified and the standard qualities of Amber, Arctic and Munken are available as FSC certified. We use pulp from certified forests (e.g. FSC and PEFC) and controlled woods to produce our products. Our mills are continuous working to establish increased deliveries of FSC pulp but the availability on the market is limited.

Waste products. In the processes at Munkedals we separate biosediment that fulfils the criteria for being spread on the fields, thereby contributing to the natural eco-cycle. Recycling. In all our mills we have developed systems for waste materials whereby they are sorted and recycled, or used as an energy source if possible.

Reducing emissions to air. Purchased electricity and oil are our main energy sources in Munkedal and Håfreström. In Munkedal our own waterpowered turbines contribute to the energy production. We also invest in highly effective computer-controlled oil burners for reducing emissions. In Kostrzyn we opened a new heat and power plant, fuelled by gas, that replaces the old coal-based plant.
