Book typography, paper and illustration.
Three aspects of a good publication.

This is the slogan under which Arctic Paper Polska and D2D.pl – the company which published Book typography. A Designer’s Manual written by Michael Mitchell and Susan Wightman – starts a cycle of lectures devoted to graphic design.

The lectures are a continuation of the meetings organised in the year 2008 under the slogan: T like Typography and in the year 2010 under the slogan A detail in typography. Both of those meetings enjoyed great interest. This time, a manual by Michael Mitchell and Susan Wightman became the main inspiration.

Book typography... is a guide on principles of design and composition, illustrated and clarified with the use of over one thousand precisely selected illustrations. This extensive collection of examples and information covers each significant element of the book design process. The authors do not impose their opinion on the readers, they do not try to persuade them that their solutions supported by many years of experience are the only right solutions. They analyse many examples with deep insight, prompting how to design and publish a beautiful book.

Instead of boring descriptions from the history of typography and definitions, we get specific examples of use of modern fonts, an insightful analysis of their visual impact on the reader and recommendations for the proper selection of their size, so that they could meet the requirements of legibility and aesthetics of both the text and the illustrations accompanying them. The whole is enriched by the discussion regarding compositions of different types of books as well as their preparation for print and proper settings of options in editorial programmes.

The first meeting will be held on May 15th, 2013 at the Library of the Warsaw University at ul. Dobra 56/66, room 256, during the following hours: 3.00 p.m.–7.00 p.m.

The speakers will include: Michał Büthner-Zawadzki giving a lecture entitled: Is paper of any relevance and why so, Robert Oleś with a lecture on Book typography and Daniel Mizieliński, presenting a lecture entitled The illustration is dead, long live the illustration, i.e. why am I a despot.
