Arctic Paper Munkedals AB is situated on the west coast of Sweden, by the Örekil River. The river is one of Sweden’s richest in salmon, and it flows into the country’s only threshold fjord, Gullmarn. Both the river and the fjord are conservation areas. Because of Arctic Paper Munkedals AB’s sensitive location, we became interested at an early stage in adapting our production to suit the natural surroundings.

The mill is now one of the most environmentally-friendly paper mills in the world. In addition to low water consumption the mill has some of the lowest discharge figures in the industry. We use around 3-4 litres of water to produce one kilo of paper, while other similar production units use 10-15 litres of water*. Year by year our emissions into the fjord have been reduced and the water we discharge now carries hardly any particles.
But the aim is to become even better. Our vision for the future is to create a totally self-contained production process, which would completely eliminate discharge into the water.
