Environmental friendly book paper makes a difference

The environmental challenge for our earth is growing and the debate about the increasing climate threats has been intense during the last year. It is becoming more and more clear that every little or big action that gives a positive impact on the environment is important. Also in the bookpaper area there is a need to continue making better environmental choices. It is good to see that the consumption and reading of books continues to be on a high level. The interest in high quality books is maybe higher than ever before. Due to that fact, the need of using environmental book paper is increasing. With reference to the UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day the 23rd of April, Arctic Paper would like to encourage publishers to make active environmental choices when developing and producing books.

A European survey shows that nearly as much as seven out of ten citizens in Nordic European countries have read a book during the latest year, in school, at home or at work. The reading community is almost as big in Great Britain, the Baltic countries and the Czech Republic. In German and Spain about 40 percent has read a book during the previous year. Despite the fact that there has been an explosion of other media channels, such as internet and dvd, people in Europe still spend as much time reading books today as ten years ago! This proves that there still is a strong demand to preserve the book in its original form. The feeling of having a good book in our hands is something that can not be compared to any other media experience.

Arctic Paper has a long experience and knowledge about environmental issues linked to production of paper. The full Munken Book paper range is since 2006 FSC-certified. Using FSC-certified paper in books and other printed materials is a better environmental choice. It is an easy way to care about the environment but still use high quality paper.

FSC is an independent environmental organisation that identifies well-managed forests as approved sources of forest products. The FSC aims to promote environmentally sound, conscious and financially viable use of the world’s forest resources. This means that wood used to produce paper must come from a forest managed in line with a strict environmental, social and economic standard.

Arctic Paper will continue to step by step strive for reducing the impact on the environment when producing the paper. The tradition at Arctic Paper of caring for the environment dates back to the early sixties when the Munkedal mill was facing an environmental challenge. The Gullmar Fjord, which flows right past the mill, needed to be cleaner. The mill is in a very environmentally sensitive area and following extensive environmental work, the ample fish stocks returned and local people could once again swim in the fjord. Today the Gullmar Fjord is a marine reserves. The active environmental work has since become one of the top priorities for Arctic Paper. We have seen in our own surroundings that good environmental choices can make a big difference.
