To better understand and manage our sustainability-related impacts, risks and opportunities, we conducted a double materiality assessment. In this process we have identified the material topics we need to focus on to continue improving our sustainability performance such as climate change, efficiency of key natural resources such as energy and water, circularity in our production processes and products as well as working conditions and safety for our employees and embedding sustainability throughout our value chain.

CO₂ emissions and energy usage

At Arctic Paper, we work continuously to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and throughout the value chain. In 2025, we finalised Arctic Paper Group 2030 decarbonization strategy aligned with Since Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). We aim to increase the use of renewable energy, improve energy efficiency and work closely with suppliers to decrease emissions from purchased wood, pulp and chemicals, and transportation, among others.

We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain

 

We will focus on purchasing green electircity and process steam with a lower carbon footprint (generated using biofuels) and replacing existing installations with lower carbon emissions solutions. We monitor our suppliers GHG emissions and their progress in implementing decarbonization actions.

Responsible sourcing

Arctic Paper buys pulp based on raw material from sustainably managed forests. This is ensured by the FSC^® and PEFC certifications which prove traceability and confirm that the wood was sourced legally and has not contributed to deforestation of endangered areas or areas of high conservation value. Our products have also such certificates as the EU Ecolabel and Nordic Swan Ecolabel that ensures our customers of sustainably sourced wood. 

Our goal is to source pulp for paper production from FSC^® or PEFC certified suppliers at 100%.

Circular economy 

Our priority is to be a part of production system based on circularity. It starts with sourcing certified renewable raw material and continues through reusing and recycling of resources to generate as little waste as possible. Each year, we make efforts to reduce waste to landfill by increasing the efficiency of raw material. 

The foundation of our circular business model is sustainably managed forests and the renewable raw materials they provide.

Our products meet circularity criteria that are confirmed by relevant certifications they hold, such as C2C Certified® Material Health. 

Selected Arctic Paper products have been tested and approved for use in EU Ecolabel and Nordic Swan Ecolabel, which confirm the efficient use of resources, including lower consumption of raw materials.

Water

In our production process we concentrate on water use efficiency, water reuse and purification. 

To reduce water consumption, we continuously improve water management and aim to recirculate as much water as possible. Water that cannot be recirculated is treated on-site before being returned to the rivers near our mills – the Warta, Munkedalsälven and Grycken – from which it was originally sourced.

We make efforts to reduce the load of pollutants discharged with wastewater. We modernize freshwater treatment infrastructures aimed at improving control of the quality of water discharged into the environment.

People 

We take responsibility for our employees, customers and the societies in which we operate. Our focus is on secure workplace, social dialogue and delivering our customers products that are safe for their health and wellbeing. 

We strive to make our units safe places to work and reduce the number of injuries. To reach these goals, we foster a strong health and safety culture, carry out risk observations, implement improvements, and provide continuous training for our employees. 

Our products are made using chemicals that are safe for people and the environment. We use methodologies and the experiences of third parties to create new ways to produce our different paper ranges, based on chemical hazard identification and the impact of particular solutions on product quality, taking into account both the manufacturing process and the use and end-of-life of the product.

Governance 

Our commitments are reflected in our Code of Conduct and Sustainability Policy, which our employees and suppliers are expected to respect and follow. We develop and implement our policies and internal regulations in accordance with international standards and initiatives. 

To strengthen compliance, we provide anti-corruption and compliance training to employees in roles with the highest risk exposure. We also monitor potential incidents through our Whistleblower platforms.
